Bob and Sharon's Glorious Adventures

Our First Assignment - Palo Duro

So today we veer off our planned course on Highway 64 and head into the Texas panhandle and on to Amarillo. The going is slow as I try to keep the RPM's at a reasonable level. Actually the transmission is doing better than yesterday.

We are not sure where we are going to camp in the Amarillo area. I spot a highway sign for Palo Duro Canyon State Park. About the same time Sharon finds it in the campground directory. I remember Palo Duro Canyon for the writings of Terry Johnston; specifically his book Dying Thunder.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is south of Amarillo. The land is flat. It is impossible to imagine canyons while looking at the vista as you speed down the highway. At the visitor center we were greeted by Biscuit and Gravy, two Texas longhorn cattle kept at the park.

As we left the visitor center we began to descend into the canyon and were amazed by the depth and beauty.

We set up camp and settled in for the weekend.

Saturday we drove into Amarillo to look for the Volkswagon dealer. We were unable to locate one and we were told there isn't one in Amarillo. The only listing I could find is in Lubbock. I tried the VW customer assistance line again but they were closed. We decided Monday we would make an appointment in Albuquerque then head for our assignment at the RV park in Cortez, Colorado. We'll be a couple days late in arriving.

After lunch and a stop at Wal*Mart we returned to Palo Duro SP. In the park we visited the gift shop and museum. The museum had interesting information on the area and CCC activities there.

We spent the rest of the weekend enjoying Palo Duro. One drive was through some of the canyon after a rain storm.

Monday we packed up and went into Amarillo. We stopped at R & R Quilts and More where we purchased material for a quilt. Then we went across the street to Hobby Lobby. the next stop was Flying J Travel Plaza to fill the propane tank.

We had seen billboards advertising it. Our last stop before leaving Amarillo had to be the Big Texan Steak Ranch , home of the free 72 ounce steak .

Neither of us ate anywhere near 72 ounces of steak, but we had a good lunch and really enjoyed ourselves.

After lunch we got on Interstate 40 and headed west to New Mexico.
